Lights, cameras, (fog, and hopefully that means no crime) action! When it comes to how you protect your business against crime, there’s an array of choice. What you decide on will be dependent on your budget, of course, but it will also be dependent on your site, and the type of industry you’re in. Here we discuss three options, light sensors, CCTV and fog cannons, and how you can use these to deter criminals and protect your assets.

How can you use light sensors as a crime deterrent?

One of the easiest ways to deter criminals is illuminating them in bright light. Criminals work most comfortably under the cover of darkness, so if you remove that, they’re much more likely to be seen and caught, reducing the risk of them trying at all.

You could choose to have timed lighting, set to come on at dusk, or motion sensor lighting that’s triggered by movement. Whatever you decide, ensure that the lighting you choose is incredibly bright, and secure the lighting and sensors in places that make vandalism difficult.

What are the pros and cons of CCTV?

CCTV is one of the most popular choices, and partnered with signage – e.g. ‘smile, you’re on camera!’, it can be a very effective choice at crime prevention. You’ll need to ensure you have a clear strategy when it comes to the placement of your cameras, focussing on high traffic areas, entrance and exit points, potential ‘blind spots’, and on high value areas. However, there’s a balance to be had, too much focus on a building that contains your most valuable assets could make it a target – having the opposite effect!

You’ll also need to be aware of any maintenance, including clearing overgrown hedges and tree branches that could obstruct vision.

Have you considered fog cannons?

Finally, there’s fog cannons. Best placed in a building that contains high value items, fog alarms, when triggered, fill the room with– you guessed it – thick fog. This makes it incredibly difficult for criminals to find the items that want to steal, and difficult to them to navigate an escape room. It will also notify via audible alarm or text message when it’s triggered, alerting you to criminal behaviour.
