Domestically, having a great relationship with your neighbours makes a huge difference to the place you call home. But, having a great relationship with your business neighbours is just as – if not more so – important. Why? Let us explain…

1. Reporting suspicious behaviour

Sharing contact details with your business neighbours is more than just an opportunity for networking and profit, it could make the difference between criminals gaining access to your property or not. Neighbours know the typical ebb and flow of everyday life on your business estate, and as such are particularly well equipped for noticing anything, or any behaviour, that’s out of the ordinary or suspicious. As such, they’d be able to raise the alarm and call the local authorities if needed should someone be trespassing on your property without your knowledge.

If you work alongside a company that operates with different business hours to you, this is even more valuable. An active neighbouring building throughout the night, for night shift work for example, would put criminals off attempting to gain access to your building even if you operate within ‘normal’ business hours.

2. Shared / overlapping resources

If you’re in a position where you share the same entrance or exit points, or the same driveway, for example, with a neighbouring business, it might be that your CCTV has visibility over part of their property and vice versa. If you have a particularly good relationship, you might be able to strategically plan where you can each position CCTV cameras to benefit each of you in a cost-effective way. The same could be true for motion-sensor lighting, and security signage, each of which is also a great deterrent to crime. With the cost of the living crisis still very much impacting day-to-day life, this could be a great solution to increasing your crime prevention without as much expenditure.

3. Shared security services, such as mobile patrol units

Finally, there’s the option to invest in a mutually beneficial security service to benefit both businesses, such as sharing the contract of a mobile patrol unit or a manned guarding service. In the same way, detailed above, this gives you each a premium security service but allows you to share the cost.
